Tea & Coffee Frequently Asked Questions

Loose leaf tea consists of whole or partially whole tea leaves, which have more room to expand and release their full flavor during steeping. Traditional tea bags typically contain broken leaves and dust, which brew faster but with less complexity and nuance. Loose leaf tea generally produces a richer, more flavorful cup and retains more of the natural oils and aromatics that make each variety unique.
Store your loose leaf tea in an airtight container away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. A cool, dark cupboard is ideal. Avoid storing tea near strong-smelling foods or spices as tea leaves absorb odors easily. Properly stored, most loose leaf teas will stay fresh for up to two years, though they are best enjoyed within the first year.
A general rule of thumb is one teaspoon of loose leaf tea per eight ounces of water. However, this can vary depending on the type of tea and your personal taste preferences. Heartier teas like black and herbal blends can handle a slightly heavier measure, while delicate teas like white or green may need a lighter hand. Feel free to experiment until you find your perfect cup.
Water temperature makes a significant difference in the flavor of your cup. Boiling water at 212°F works well for black teas and most herbal blends. Green teas prefer a cooler temperature around 170°F to 180°F to avoid bitterness. White teas steep best between 160°F and 185°F, and oolong teas fall somewhere in between at around 185°F to 205°F. When in doubt, let your boiling water rest for a minute or two before pouring.
Steeping time varies by tea type. Black teas generally steep for three to five minutes, green teas for two to three minutes, white teas for two to four minutes, and oolong teas for three to five minutes. Herbal and fruit blends can steep for five minutes or longer since they don’t contain tannins and won’t turn bitter. Over-steeping is the most common mistake new loose leaf drinkers make, so start on the shorter end and adjust to taste.
Yes, and we highly recommend it. Many high quality loose leaf teas are designed to be steeped multiple times, with each infusion revealing slightly different flavors and characteristics. Green, white, and oolong teas in particular respond beautifully to a second or even third steep. Simply add a little extra steeping time with each subsequent infusion. This is one of the many reasons loose leaf tea offers such great value compared to tea bags.
Tea generally contains significantly less caffeine than coffee. An eight ounce cup of coffee contains roughly 80 to 100 milligrams of caffeine, while black tea contains approximately 40 to 70 milligrams and green tea around 20 to 45 milligrams. White tea is the lowest in caffeine among traditional teas. Herbal teas are naturally caffeine free, making them a great option for evening enjoyment. If you are sensitive to caffeine, steeping your tea for a shorter time can also help reduce the amount extracted.
Store whole bean coffee in an airtight container at room temperature, away from light, heat, and moisture. Contrary to popular belief, the refrigerator is not ideal for coffee storage as the fluctuating temperatures and moisture can affect flavor. A cool, dark pantry is your best bet. Whole bean coffee is at its peak freshness within two to four weeks of the roast date, so we recommend purchasing in smaller quantities and grinding just before brewing for the best possible cup.
